About this programme

Inclusive Practice in Autism and Neurodiversity: From Understanding to Action is a highly practical course supporting primary and secondary school staff to develop a deeper understanding of autism and neurodivergent profiles, and to translate this into inclusive, effective practice across the whole school day.

All course content is written by clinicians who specialise in Autism; the authors have over 50 years’ combined clinical experience working in mainstream and special school settings.

This programme will support your school to meet the seven principles of inclusion outlined within the Inclusive Mainstream Fund: Best Practice for Schools guidance document.

  • School leaders will be equipped with practical tools to embed inclusion into the school and monitor improvements in participation, attainment, attendance and wellbeing for neurodivergent learners.

  • The programme provides staff with the knowledge, understanding and confidence to identify areas of need and implement evidence-informed strategies immediately. They will learn how to create inclusive environments, deliver high-quality adaptive teaching and make meaningful adjustments to the curriculum.

  • The focus throughout this training programme is on translating understanding into action, so that inclusion is embedded into everyday practice rather than classed as an additional intervention.

Why do we need this?

10 reasons why every school needs this programme

  • Build your inclusive knowledge and skills – Develop a deeper understanding of a wide range of neurodivergent profiles, including Autism, ADHD, Tourette syndrome, developmental language differences and more, so you can confidently apply the skills taught in this course to meet the needs of the learners in front of you.

  • Autism is the fastest-growing area of SEND in schools – Autism is now the most common primary need within EHCPs, with increasing numbers of Autistic pupils educated in mainstream settings. Many schools are supporting Autistic children without sufficient training, guidance, or systemic understanding.

  • Inclusion cannot rely on diagnosis alone – Long waiting times for diagnosis and EHCPs mean schools must support pupils based on need, not labels. This programme gives staff the skills to identify early signs and implement support strategies immediately based on the need of individual learners.

  • Communication differences are often overlooked in Autism – From non-speaking pupils to early communicators and gestalt language processors, Autistic communication profiles are diverse. This programme supports staff to adapt environments, interaction styles and expectations so all learners can communicate effectively.

  • Sensory needs are central to accessing learning – When staff don’t understand sensory processing differences, pupils may be dysregulated and not available for learning. This programme provides structured guidance, strategies and reflection tools across all sensory systems, supporting meaningful participation and appropriate onward referral.

  • Behaviour is communication and staff need the tools to respond – Meltdowns, shutdowns, anxiety and burnout are often responses to unmet sensory, communication and/or emotional needs. The programme reframes behaviour through a neuro-affirming lens and provides practical, trauma-informed strategies rooted in understanding and co-regulation.

  • Reduces exclusion, absence and school-based trauma – Autistic and neurodivergent pupils are disproportionately excluded and more likely to experience school refusal. By addressing triggers, environments and adult responses, this programme supports schools to reduce escalation, long-term disengagement and exclusion.

  • Supports whole-school safeguarding and wellbeing responsibilities – Children who struggle to communicate, regulate or feel safe are more vulnerable. Understanding Autism and neurodivergent profiles helps staff notice distress, listen effectively and meet safeguarding duties under KCSIE.

  • Builds staff confidence and reduces reliance on crisis referrals – Practical, classroom-based strategies empower teachers and support staff to act proactively rather than reactively, reducing over-reliance on external services and adversarial EHCP processes.

  • Meet Ofsted's SEND expectations – Inspectors expect schools to identify, support and review the needs of all pupils – including those with Autism – through a graduated response. This programme equips staff to observe, plan and adapt support effectively, even before a diagnosis or EHCP is in place.

Modules included

In this interactive training and resource programme, packed with practical strategies, downloadable resources, real-world examples and opportunities for reflection, you will learn across six key modules:

  • Leadership Module

A strategic overview for senior leaders and SENDCOs. This module introduces the Whole-School Inclusion Audit Tool, helping you evaluate current provision, identify priorities and create a clear action plan for developing inclusive practice across your setting.

  • Module 1 – Understanding Neurodiversity in Schools Today

A neuro-affirming introduction to Autism and other neurodivergent profiles. Challenge common myths, explore the diverse presentation of neurodivergent learners and develop a deeper understanding of the factors that influence learning, participation and wellbeing. Discover simple, evidence-informed strategies that can be implemented immediately in your classroom.

  • Module 2 – Making Sense of Sensory Differences

Understand sensory processing differences and their impact on learning, behaviour and wellbeing. Access practical classroom strategies, environmental checklists, advice sheets and downloadable resources to help reduce sensory stress and create supportive, accessible learning environments.

  • Module 3 – Non-Speaking Autism Presentation

Explore augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and non-speaking communication, presuming competence and inclusive approaches to interaction. Access practical strategy guides, communication supports, downloadable resources and real-life examples that will help you create more accessible learning environments from day one.

  • Module 4 – Verbal Neurodivergent Learners

Develop your understanding of hidden communication needs, language processing differences, pragmatics and social understanding. Learn how to identify needs, implement effective classroom strategies, monitor progress using our downloadable tracking tools, and select appropriate next steps for support.

  • Module 5 – From Behaviour to Understanding

Move beyond behaviour management and develop a deeper understanding of what behaviour may be communicating. Learn how to identify individual triggers, recognise patterns, use practical analysis tools and match support strategies to each learner's unique profile and needs.

  • Module 6 – From Understanding to Action

Bring together your learning from across the course through case studies, worked examples and practical problem-solving activities. Explore how to implement strategies effectively, evaluate their impact and build respectful, collaborative relationships with learners, families, colleagues and external professionals to improve consistency, inclusion and outcomes.
