About the Programme

Many leaders clearly have goals and a vision for how to achieve them.

However, they often lack the training and preparation necessary to build the right relationships and develop the appropriate behaviors for effective interactions.

This lack of skills can hinder their ability to motivate and influence others, which is essential for encouraging team members to give their best and align their efforts with one another.

Create Highly Successful Teams within your School

This training offers a comprehensive guide to the full spectrum of behaviours and strategies required and supports leaders to self reflect on their strengths and weaknesses in this spectrum so they can actively work on and improve those aspects they find most challenging.

It is a highly practical approach that has been fine-tuned over many years to be both engaging and easily understood by people of all cultures and disciplines. The work involved is done by the learner themselves practicing the skills in their own situation and with the people they engage with on a day-to-day basis.

The leadership training that is undergone by leaders in the UK ( NPQH et al) focusses on the first two elements of leadership – knowing what you want to achieve and then how to get there.

It is absolutely evident from years of applying this programme in education that this training addresses directly the third question of how to motivate and interact with people in a comprehensive way that is entirely absent from these programmes.

Candidates universally find the ideas and the approach highly relevant top their real life problems as leaders and comment that this is new information and was almost entirely absent in their previous training.

The key elements of the programme are

  • Tool 1: ENTRY
    Building trust and relationship

  • Tool 2: CONTRACTING
    Neogotiating goal and expectation

  • Tool 3: CATALYTIC STYLE
    Coaching through questions and summary

  • Tool 4: ACCEPTANT STYLE
    Showing empathy and emotional intelligence

  • Tool 5: CONFRONTATIONAL STYLE
Challenging in a respectful way – contrasting agreed intentions and actual behaviour

  • Tool 6: PRESCRIPTIVE STYLE
Giving thoughtful and timely advice and direction

  • Tool 7: EFFECTIVE FEEDBACK
Giving accurate and acceptable feedback on performance

Who is the Programme for?

Any school leaders , head teacher, member of the SLT , middle manager, classroom teacher, who is after all leading her TAs and children. It also includes ancillary staff leaders.

It is helpful to see that Leadership skills of this sort are not just useful to people with formal leadership positions. The skills are actually incredibly useful to most staff in a school as they help develop a culture of constructive relationships across the whole school.

This has been proven in a number of schools where a whole school approach has helped create a great working climate, better relationships with parents, effective collaboration and a collaborative approach to the inevitable conflicts and disagreements that can plague a school if not dealt with in a constructive way.

  • Aspiring and current leaders

seeking to enhance their communication and relationship-building skills for more effective team management and collaboration.

  • Professionals in any industry

looking to improve their ability to handle challenging conversations, negotiate successfully, and foster trust in both personal and professional settings.

  • School Leaders

eager to develop emotional intelligence, refine problem-solving abilities, and gain tools for providing constructive feedback and guidance.

What Is The Provenance of The Leading and Influencing Programme

The fundamental ideas behind the 7 Tools originate from a broad range of renowned psyschologists, and leadership thinksrs including Carl Rogers, Chris Argyris, Peter Block, Blake and Mouton, Socrates, Karl Jung, Edgar Schein, Steve Radcliffe, Daniel Goleman, Brenee Brown, Fisher & Ury, Rosenberg and many others.

Underpinning the approach is a person-centred principle about leadership which assumes that most of the time in the modern world people follow because they want to do a good job and that the leaders job is to unlock that potential for great work in every individual. The approach appeals to people who are prepared to take that responsibility on fully and aim to continuously improve their ability in this part of their leadership journey.

Nick Zienau has spent the last 30 years of his life as a consultant/coach trainer  in leadership, for education, charity and private sector organisations. Including MSF, the UN, many schools across London, education systems in Finland, Estonia, Netherlands and a number of innovative companies.

He has been delivering and adjusting this programme throughout that time as well as using the tools himself in his coaching and consulting practice.

The impetus   for writing this version of the  programme came from a desire to roll-out a system of thinking about leadership that has worked really well in  Nick’s work in schools in Camden, Tower Hamlets , Redbridge, Southwark and Waltham Forest where Nick was involved in coaching many head teachers during the pandemic and a number of highl;y  successful whole school applications of the 7 tools model.

School leaders comments show that the approacvh can be an enormous help to  senior leaders who are in  danger of ‘ losing the staffroom’, struggling  to deal with dysfunctional staff dymanics or challenging iudividuals at whatever level ,. The approach also has proved highly effective for leaders struggling with the challenge to cope with the constant  issues emerging from staff  and parents especially the persistent ones that can occupy so much of a leaders emotional  bandwidth.

Feedback from school leaders that have all done qualifications such as NPQH b, NPQML is interesting.

They have consistently reported that while very useful  these courses  hadn’t helped them manage the relationships with other people or give them toolks fo interacting with people..’

This is exactly what the programme does.
